It is with great excitement that ISA will be getting back together again in Nashville this spring for our annual convention.  Throughout this challenging time, we have been gratified to receive the strong support for ISA from our members. As part of ISA’s “re-opening,” we have already hosted several successful Fall conferences – ISA-West, ISA-South, ISA-Northeast (virtual), ISSS, and ISA-Midwest (upcoming next week). Congratulations and thanks to hundreds of members who have gotten together to collaborate and present research. And thanks, as well, to all those who have helped organize this re-opening events.

As with all our events, and looking toward Nashville, ISA is working to ensure that everyone can be healthy and safe at the convention. And we are confident we can do so based on a great working relationship with the hotel, our other contractors and our members.

Is academic freedom a human right? Understandings of academic freedom are contested, and vary from one place to another, with different challenges to institutional autonomy and academic governance depending on the political context of a country. Do scholars and institutions in the global south face the same challenges as in the global north? How do we account for variations in argumentation when defending academic freedom? This panel explores perspectives on academic freedom in different countries/regions and cultural contexts to assess its content and impact. Scholars and rights defenders from Afghanistan, Ghana, Chile, Kurdistan and Western Europe address the quest for consensus in the defense of academic freedom.
