ISA 2023 "In Other Words"

In Other Words is a group of non-English roundtables held at ISA's annual convention that seeks to explore the role of the English language in governing academic practice, by facilitating or impeding communication, and by determining academic proficiency and legitimacy within the field of International Studies. The goals of this program are to achieve (a) greater linguistic inclusiveness that reflects the diversity of International Studies, (b) to consider how collaborative approaches to global problems can be achieved without sacrificing linguistic diversity, and (c) to expand on what effective avenues may be available for communicating and sharing knowledge across regional and linguistic divides. The deadline for "In Other Words" submissions is June 1, 2022.

Proposals in any language are welcome and will be considered. Proposals should be submitted in both English and the chosen language, and follow the standard roundtable requirements of a title, abstract, and research terms/tag words as well as a chair and at least five participants. Although the roundtables themselves will be conducted in the designated presentation language, the audience will be free to ask questions or comment in English.

ISA 2023 Structuring Inclusion

The Structuring Inclusion series aims to challenge systemic exclusion through the articulation of new practices, approaches, cultures, and institutional parameters that liberate ISA in particular, and scholarship in general. Drawing from expertise across research, governance, teaching, and decision-making, we seek proposals for full panels and roundtables that highlight the work that is being done to increase the visibility and authority of scholars from diverse experiences and positions, disentangling scholarship from static modes of thought and behaviors that are closed and privileged.

We encourage both panels that offer practical reforms and institutional mechanisms to advance inclusivity in ISA or at our home institutions, and those that provide support, encouragement, and strategies for coping with differential treatment in professional and academic settings. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2022.

Jargon Jumble

Submitters are challenged to develop the most accessible and understandable version of their work, using only the 1000 most common English words, and submit it for review against others. This competition will culminate at the 2023 Annual Convention, where the final competitors will participate in a roundtable at the Annual Convention to discuss their work and the challenges of effective professional communication. The winner will receive a free registration for ISA2024. The proposal deadline is June 1, 2022.

Junior Scholar Symposium

This format provides a fantastic opportunity for junior scholars to meet and connect with senior scholars in their field. Each JSS session brings together approximately 16 junior scholar projects with four senior discussants from among ISA’s leading scholars. Following a broad introduction to the session, the symposium divides into four small thematic groups wherein, using posters, participants will present and discuss their work in this small group setting.

JSS is not separate submission types, but all individual papers can also be marked for consideration in this program. The deadline for all submissions is June 1, 2022.
